Walk-A-Thon February 2010 Fund Raiser


Walk-a-thon - This event is one of the single largest fund raisers for many school PTAs, including Nimitz. The term "Walk-a-thon" comes from relatively modern 1930's English derived from 'Walk + Marathon.' As the etymology suggests, people walk, and for a long distance (marathon), usually to help raise money for charities.

This year, our goal is to raise $10,000 from this event. This is more critical than in previous years. The PTA needs most of these funds to sustain the quality of school programs, and special curricula in Music, Art and Technology. In addition, the PTA anticipates that 2010 state budget cuts will have a large impact on teaching supplies like paper, toner, ink cartridges and general student consummables.

The Nimitz PTA will host this year's Walkathon for ALL Grades K - 5 on Friday, February 12, 2010.

The Nimitz Walkathon happens at the School Park and kids walk laps around the track and field receiving stamps in their passport for each lap completed.

Students will help raise money while they walk. They each should have received a Donor/Sponsor Form from their classrooms. If not, the same form is downloadable below. Students should spend the days and weeks -before- the Walkathon asking Parents, Aunts/Uncles, GrandParents, Neighbors, and Family Friends to sponsor them as donors. The donation can be a flat amount (e.g. $20 or $50) for participating, or it can be based on distance (e.g. $5/lap). Try to help students maximize contributions by getting sponsors to commit more money per lap or larger flat fee donations.

Volunteers Needed

This year, the theme is "Walk for a Healthy Heart." Parents

PTA Volunteers are needed. Some parents help setup the field for the walkathon by bringing music, power, tables and canopies. Some help teachers guide and supervise kids while they walk. A team of Parents are needed to punch cards and track kids for each lap completed, and lastly, Parents staff the refreshment table where kids keep hydrated with cool water and sports drinks.
