PARENT CONFERENCES
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming goal setting conferences, which will take place October 5-13. All grades will be dismissed at 12:25 pm.

Please arrange to have your child picked up promptly. Trimester conferences are an opportunity to:
  • Share information about student strengths, interests, and needs.

  • Establish a caring and collaborative relationship.

  • Develop mutual goals for student learning and behavior.
Teachers, parents, and students (when appropriate) set goals directly related to district standards for student learning as well as specific social, emotional, and behavioral goals appropriate to the student and the grade level. They also identify strategies to support student attainment of grade level standards. In addition, the goal setting conference held early in the year allows teachers and parents to identify students at risk of retention and design interventions to help them meet grade level standards.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCHES
If your child was receiving a free or reduced lunch last year, your child will continue to receive the free or reduced lunch until Wednesday, September 30th. You need to reapply for the free and reduced lunch before September 30th in order to receive these lunches this year. If you do not turn in the application, your child will need to pay for their lunch. Also, if there is a situation that you may now qualify for a free or reduced lunch, please be sure to turn in an application as well. Lunch applications are printed in the back of the Opening Day Packet booklet and extra copies are available in the office.

NIMITZ STAFF HONORED
Two of our Nimitz staff members were recognized at the CUSD Board Meeting at Nimitz on September 8th. Lisa Rice, one of our first grade teachers, and Malavi Murthy, our school psychologist, received tenure in our district. We are grateful for the contributions they make to our students. Congratulations Lisa and Malavi!

CUPERTINO FALL FESTIVAL
Mark your calendar for the Cupertino Fall Festival, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th. On Sunday, September 20th, at 2:00pm our Kindergarten classes will be performing the Chicken Dance
The festival will be held at the Cupertino Civic Center Field on Torre Avenue (between the Library and Pacifica Drive). Come cheer on our Kindergartners!

VISITING CAMPUS
ALL VISITORS ON CAMPUS or entering classrooms as volunteers or meeting with teachers MUST sign in at the office and obtain a visitor's badge when school is in session. For the safety of all, we need to know who is on campus. The only exceptions are at student arrival and dismissal times. If you are taking your child out of school for any reason, ALWAYS sign your child out through the office and back in when he/she returns.

Please remember that adults volunteering in any capacity, including noontime supervisors, classroom volunteers and field trip drivers, must have a current (dated within the last four years) negative tuberculin test on file with the school. The Intradermal Mantoux PPD Skin Test is given at most medical clinics. A voucher from the Cupertino Medical Clinic is available in the office. The test costs $15.00. Please bring documentation of your negative PPD Skin Test or X-Ray to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you!

You Belong In PTA - Join Now!
PTA membership enrollment forms are included in today's blue communication folder. When the PTA gets involved, children benefit. When you get involved with PTA, the child that benefits most is your own.

NIMITZ PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
All Nimitz students can benefit from parent volunteer help. If you have a few extra minutes, consider helping the Running Club, Copy Center, Library, Crosswalk Guards, etc. You can bring your younger children along for many of these volunteer jobs. Some volunteer positions can be done whenever you have a few minutes (like after student drop-off or before pick-up) and do not require any commitment other then an initial training. If you have not already, please sign up online at http://www.nimitzpta.org or fill out a Nimitz Volunteer Form in the office. We are also in need of parents who would be willing to tutor in math or reading. If you are available to help, please contact Tracy Burriss at Burriss_tracy@cusdk8.org.

RUNNING CLUB REALLY NEEDS YOUR HELP!
We are in urgent need of parents to help out during lunch (11:45-12:55), Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
If you are available to punch cards or help supervise students, please email/call Tracy Burriss at burriss_tracy@cusdk8.org or ph. (408) 732-4563.

H1N1 GUIDELINES

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department guidance recommends that, based on current flu conditions, students and staff with flu-like illness stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen).

You can help keep our schools healthy by adhering to the following guidelines:
  • Continue to enforce proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette - The recommendations continue to emphasize the importance of the basic foundations of disease prevention: stay home when sick, wash hands frequently with soap and water when possible or alcohol based hand sanitizer, and cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).

  • Leave accurate information as requested on the school's absence line if your child is sick. This will help the school identify any potential issues as soon as possible.

  • Promptly pick up your child from school if they are sent home for being ill. The school will keep ill students separated from others until they can be sent home. Please make sure that the school office has your updated contact information.

  • Any returning students after an illness with a fever will need to have their temperature taken in the school office before returning to class. Teachers will be sending returning students back to the office to have their temperatures taken if they arrive directly to the classroom without being cleared.

INITIAL AND ANNUAL CELDT TESTING
The Cupertino Union School District will administer the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) to all students eligible for English Language Development services. This test will be administered from the beginning of September through the end of October. Based on your child's last years CELDT scores if their proficiency level is limited, withdrawn or transitional, your child will be included in the annual CELDT test at their school. The initial CELDT will be given to kindergarten students whose primary language on the home language survey is a language other than English. A letter will be sent home with your child prior to the initial and annual testing date at your school. The test consists of four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grades K-8 are tested in all four areas. This year only reading and writing for kindergarten and first grade students will not affect their overall proficiency level. You will receive the official results after January 2010. If you have any questions, please contact your school office.
