FREE AND REDUCED LUNCHES
If your child was receiving a free or reduced lunch last year, your child
will continue to receive the free or reduced lunch until
Wednesday, September 30th. You need to reapply for the free and
reduced lunch before September 30th in order to receive these lunches
this year. If you do not turn in the application, your child
will need to pay for their lunch. Also, if there is a situation that
you may now qualify for a free or reduced lunch, please be sure to turn
in an application as well. Lunch applications are printed in the back
of the Opening Day Packet booklet and extra copies are available in
the office.

NIMITZ STAFF HONORED
Two of our Nimitz staff members were recognized at the CUSD Board
Meeting at Nimitz on September 8th. Lisa Rice, one of our first
grade teachers, and Malavi Murthy, our school psychologist, received
tenure in our district. We are grateful for the contributions
they make to our students. Congratulations Lisa and Malavi!
The festival will be held at the Cupertino Civic Center Field
on Torre Avenue (between the Library and Pacifica Drive). Come
cheer on our Kindergartners!
VISITING CAMPUS
ALL VISITORS ON CAMPUS or entering classrooms as volunteers or meeting
with teachers MUST sign in at the office and obtain a visitor's badge
when school is in session. For the safety of all, we need to know
who is on campus. The only exceptions are at student arrival and
dismissal times. If you are taking your child out of school for any
reason, ALWAYS sign your child out through the office and back in
when he/she returns.
Please remember that adults volunteering in any capacity, including noontime supervisors, classroom volunteers and field trip drivers, must have a current (dated within the last four years) negative tuberculin test on file with the school. The Intradermal Mantoux PPD Skin Test is given at most medical clinics. A voucher from the Cupertino Medical Clinic is available in the office. The test costs $15.00. Please bring documentation of your negative PPD Skin Test or X-Ray to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you! |

NIMITZ PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
All Nimitz students can benefit from parent volunteer help. If you
have a few extra minutes, consider helping the Running Club, Copy
Center, Library, Crosswalk Guards, etc. You can bring your younger
children along for many of these volunteer jobs. Some volunteer
positions can be done whenever you have a few minutes (like after
student drop-off or before pick-up) and do not require any commitment
other then an initial training. If you have not already,
please sign up online at
http://www.nimitzpta.org or fill out a
Nimitz Volunteer Form in the office. We are also in need of parents
who would be willing to tutor in math or reading. If you are available
to help, please contact Tracy Burriss at
Burriss_tracy@cusdk8.org.
If you are available to punch cards or help supervise students, please
email/call Tracy Burriss at
burriss_tracy@cusdk8.org
or ph. (408) 732-4563.

CUPERTINO FALL FESTIVAL Saturday and Sunday September 19-20, 2009 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cupertino Civic Center Library Field Free Admission The Cupertino Fall Festival is an evolution of the very successful Cupertino Jubilee and Fall Festival that has been held for the past three years. The event is organized by the Rotary Club of Cupertino and will incorporate the Health and Safety zone, which will be offering flu shots, in addition to an Environmental Earth Zone hosted by the City of Cupertino. In addition, the festival is trying to collect 15,000 lbs of food to benefit West Valley Community Services. Please consider bringing at least one canned food item to the festival. The key elements of FallFest 2009 are: Kids Fun Zone; Health and Safety Zone; Environmental Earth Zone; along with great food, beverages and wonderful entertainment. Additional information is available at www.cupertinofallfest.com. INITIAL AND ANNUAL CELDT TESTING
The Cupertino Union School District will administer the California
English Language Development Test (CELDT) to all students eligible
for English Language Development services. This test will be administered
from the beginning of September through the end of October. Based on
your child's last years CELDT scores if their proficiency level is
limited, withdrawn or transitional, your child will be included
in the annual CELDT test at their school. The initial CELDT will be
given to kindergarten students whose primary language on the home
language survey is a language other than English. A letter will be
sent home with your child prior to the initial and annual testing date
at your school. The test consists of four skills: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Grades K-8 are tested in all four areas.
This year only reading and writing for kindergarten and first grade
students will not affect their overall proficiency level. You will
receive the official results after January 2010. If you have any questions,
please contact your school office.
