NEWSLETTER BY EMAIL
In an effort to save paper and reduce duplicating costs, we strongly encourage all Nimitz families to join our email group. This email group will be used only by Nimitz school staff for school announcements and the Dolphin newsletter. It's not too late to sign up. Please fill out the yellow form that is in this week's blue folder or email nelsen_kristen@cusdk8.org with the following information:
  • Your name
  • Your child(ren)'s name(s)
  • Your child(ren)'s grade(s)
  • Your child(ren)'s teacher(s)
  • The email address(es) where you prefer to receive your Nimitz information.
Please return the form or send an email by Friday, September 11th. Thank you to those of you who have already joined the Nimitz email group this year.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
While dropping your children off in front of the school, pull all the way forward to the student valet. Please have backpacks, lunches, and other belongings in the car, not in the trunk.
This will help expedite traffic flow during the morning rush. Please do not drop children off in the coned area nearest the kindergarten playground.

ENROLLMENT/HEALTH CARDS
Your child's Enrollment/Health Card is coming home today in the blue folder. Please review and update the card as soon as possible. Please make changes or additions directly on the card and then sign and date the bottom of the card. Be sure to include emergency contacts, so that we have family and friends to contact in the event that y ou cannot be reached. It is very important to have these returned as soon as possible and that you notify the school office immediately if any changes take place during the school year.

LIBRARY TO OPEN SOON!
We expect to open the library on the fourth week of September. If you have twenty minutes to an hour once a week or every other week, we need people to help shelve the books.
We will be glad to show you how to do this. In order for the kids to enjoy the library, the books need to be shelved in a timely manner. Even if you can only help for a limited amount of time, we would love to see you. Please think about what this will mean to your child. You don't have to let us know you're coming. If you have a few minutes, come on by. For questions, please call Mrs. Gallatin at 736-2180 ext. 150.

IT'S A FACT: eScrip RAISES $$$ FOR NIMITZ
It's a fact that schools need $$$. It's also a fact that grocery shopping through the eScrip program is the easiest way to raise money for our school. Everyone grocery shops; therefore, everyone can easily raise money for Nimitz! Your participation can help raise up to $4,000 per year simply by doing your grocery shopping at eScrip merchants such as Safeway, Pak -n- Save, PW Supermarket, and Andronico's! For even more earning power for Nimitz, register your credit and/or debit cards and shop at participating merchants such as Eddie Bauer, Macy's, and Sierra Trading Post. For a complete list of participating merchants, visit the eScrip website at www.escrip.com. Your contributions through your grocery shopping help support Nimitz school wide assemblies and other wonderful programs that students enjoy throughout the year. If you are not yet an eScrip member, sign up today! It's fast, simple, and FREE!

It's so easy to sign up!

  • Go to www.escrip.com.
  • Click on "welcome" then "sign up".
  • Enter our group ID#: 138057496.
  • Register your grocery club cards, credit and/or debit cards.
Want more information about eScrip? Visit www.escrip.com or contact your eScrip Coordinator, Fiona Sadowski, at (408) 530-9440 or at fiona_mackellar@yahoo.com. You shop - our school earns dollars!

NEWS Renew with Safeway by November 1st!

It's that time of year again when all eScrip members must renew their commitment to shopping at Safeway. Safeway requires all eScrip supporters to renew their commitment to them every year. For Nimitz to continue receiving your contributions made through your grocery shopping at Safeway, YOU MUST RENEW YOUR COMMITMENT BY NOVEMBER 1ST. It's so easy to renew! Choose one of these 3 easy ways!

  1. By phone: Call 1-800-801-4973 (must have your Safeway club card number available)
  2. Visit www.escrip.com and click the red checkmark "Yes! Renew" icon.
  3. Contact your eScrip coordinator, Fiona Sadowski to renew for you at (408) 530-9440 or email fiona_mackellar@yahoo.com (provide your first and last name).
If you do not renew by November 1st your contributions to Nimitz will stop, so please renew today! Have questions? Contact Fiona Sadowski at (408) 530-9440 or by email at fiona_mackellar@yahoo.com Thanks for your support!
RUNNING CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Horn and Nimitz parent and teacher, Tracy Burriss, we have a Nimitz Running Club where students can take daily laps around the field during lunchtime.
This helps keep our students in shape as they strive to reach their goal. Last year our Nimitz students ran over 18,000 miles! This program is not possible without parent support. We need parents to help out during lunch (11:45-12:55), Monday through Friday. If you are available to punch cards or help supervise students, please email/call Tracy Burriss at burriss_tracy@cusdk8.org or ph. (408) 732-4563. The Running Club would not be possible without the help of many parent volunteers who help keep things moving!

INITIAL AND ANNUAL CELDT TESTING

The Cupertino Union School District will administer the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) to all students eligible for English Language Development services. This test will be administered from the beginning of September through the end of October. Based on your childi's last years CELDT scores if their proficiency level is limited, withdrawn or transitional, your child will be included in the annual CELDT test at their school. The initial CELDT will be given to kindergarten students whose primary language on the home language survey is a language other than English. A letter will be sent home with your child prior to the initial and annual testing date at your school. The test consists of four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grades K-8 are tested in all four areas. This year only reading and writing for kindergarten and first grade students will not affect their overall proficiency level. You will receive the official results after January 2010. If you have any questions, please contact your school office.
