GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run of Silicon Valley is a new after school running program designed specifically for girls in grades 3-5. It prepares girls for a 5k (3.1 mile) run/walk event in June.
This program will take place twice a week from March to June. In order to have this program at Nimitz, we need two volunteer moms to act as coaches. Volunteers will have their own girl's participation fee waived ($175 value). We already have one volunteer coach, Nili Helman-Caspi. For more information, please call Nili at (408) 732-7729 and/or visit http://www.girlsontherun-sv.org/h3.htm.

WHY IS YOUR CHILD THANKFUL?
The children's book, The Secret of Saying Thanks, ends with this thought: "We don't give thanks because we're happy. We are happy because we give thanks."

Thinking about the reasons your family is thankful is also a great way to get your child writing. First, brainstorm with your child. What are the reasons he is thankful? Make a list.

Then write each reason on a separate piece of paper. Your child might say, "I am thankful for our dog." Now have him think of other things he could say about your pet. He may love the fact that the dog sleeps on his bed. He may like the dog's curly tail. Ask him to write more reasons he loves his pet. He may also want to draw a picture of the dog.

During the month, repeat this activity with all the reasons you are thankful. Post these illustrated stories for the whole family to read. Send them to friends and family.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
If you plan to be away from school for a minimum of five school days and a maximum of ten school days, please contact your child's teacher and the office at least one week ahead of your departure date to arrange for a special Independent Study (IS) Contract. This way your child can keep up with class.
The following guidelines must be followed:
  • A student must be enrolled for three consecutive weeks before an IS contract can be initiated.
  • The contract and homework must be returned the first day back to school with all the work complete, so days missed do not count as unexcused absences.
  • Students who are absent for more than ten consecutive days will be dropped from the school roster. When the student returns, if space is available at his or her school, the student will be reinstated. If no space is available, the student will be assigned to another school in the district where space is available.
