SPRING PORTRAITS - MAY 29th
Bud White Spring Portraits will be taken on Thursday, May 29th in the morning. Look for the order envelope in the blue folders the week before.
If you are interested in having your child's portrait taken, please have your child bring the order envelope to school on Thursday, May 29th. We are in need of two parents to help with pictures. If you are available, please call the office at 736-2180.

SPRING SING CONCERT
Please join us on Thursday, May 22nd at 6:30 p.m. outside the GLC near the flagpole for performances by Mrs. Baldwin's, Ms. Lin's, Mr. Oshiro's, Mr. Quadro/Mrs. Walker's, Mr. Rhee's, Mrs. Ruden's, Ms. Woods', Ms. Wubker's, and Ms. Yeh's classes.
Our teachers and students have been preparing a wonderful music program including square dancing. All students need to stay for the entire performance, as there is an all school sing for the finale. Parents are encouraged to join in too!

LOST LIBRARY BOOKS
All books must be turned in by Friday, May 30th. Please take a moment and search under the beds and on student's bookshelves for any overdue books from the library or lost classroom textbooks.
You will be receiving a notification from Mrs. Gallatin regarding any books that have not been returned. If your child cannot find the book, they will be charged for the lost book. Books are very expensive and we cannot afford to absorb the cost of lost or destroyed books. Students will not receive a report card until all library charges are paid. If the book is found after you have paid, your money will be refunded. Thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.

MEDICATIONS IN THE OFFICE
Katy Waugh, RN, PHN, CNS

If you have stored your child's medications in the Nimitz Health Office, please make arrangements to take them home on the last day of school.
Any medication that remains after the close of school will be discarded. If your children are attending summer school and will need the medication during the shortened day, please take it to that school site's main office on the first day of classes.

If it will be necessary for your child to receive medication during the school day next year, please pick up a blue Medication Authorization form at the school office before the last day of school, June 12th.

In order for either prescription or over-the-counter medications to be given at school, both the doctor and the parent must sign the form. When completed, bring the Medication Administration form and the medication (in the original container) to the secretaries in the school office.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me: voice-mail 408-252-3000 ext. 475 or email waugh_katy@cupertino.k12.ca.us . Have a happy and healthy summer!

LOST AND FOUND
With the onset of warm weather, our lost and found is overflowing with sweatshirts, jackets, and coats. Please remember to check the bags located near the restrooms. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity on the last day of school.

PLAN FOR SUMMER READING ACTIVITIES WITH YOUR CHILD
Does your child have a summer reading plan? If not, try the following steps to make a plan together:
  • Choose different books and magazines that complement your child's interests.
  • Remind your child that summer reading strengthens vocabulary skills and builds knowledge.
  • Schedule reading activities for when your child most enjoys reading. Read at home, on vacation and in the library.
  • Keep a list of favorite book titles.
  • Sponsor "reading times" and let your child invite a friend or two. Reward their efforts with a special treat.

NURSES' NOTES: HERE COMES THE SUN!!
Katy Waugh, RN, PHN, CNS

After many weeks of cool weather, sunny days are finally here. Most of us love the warm sunshine on our faces.
Kids love being able to go outside for recess (teachers love it, too!) And parents love longer daytime hours and the many recreational activities available to us here in Northern California. However, risks are present with the sunshine. Studies have shown that most of the sun damage which leads to skin cancer is acquired during childhood. The facts speak for themselves:
  • Skin cancer is a serious and worsening problem
  • The incidence of new skin cancer cases is increasing faster than any other type of cancer
  • Childhood sunburns increase the risk for later development of malignant melanoma
Your school nurses strongly recommend sunscreen use as part of your family's sun protection program. Sunscreen should be:
  • SPF 15 or higher
  • Broad spectrum coverage (blocks UVA and UVB light)
  • Applied generously, especially to face, neck, arms, legs and any other areas of exposed skin
  • Reapplied after strenuous activity or water sports
The only known health benefit of sunlight on the skin is the production of Vitamin D. However, Vitamin D is also present in fish, dairy, cereal, and orange juice.

In January 2003, SB 1632 became law. This bill states that schools may allow pupils the use of sunscreen during the school day without a physician's note or prescription. Students should supply their own sunscreen and keep it in their book bag or backpack. Students should not share sunscreen. Sun protective lip balm is also recommended.

Protecting your child from sun damage now will reduce his or her risk for developing skin cancer later in life. Please be sure to encourage sun safety at home while we do the same here at school.
