CLASS ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2008-2009
The Nimitz staff has begun planning for the 2008-2009 school year, including initial drafts of class lists. Student placement is done with careful consideration of the following factors:
  • Balance of boys and girls
  • Positive working relationships among students
  • Heterogeneous (mixed ability) learning groups in all classrooms
  • Social needs of students
  • Class configurations (size, combination classes, etc.)
  • Learning needs of students
  • Leadership needs within all classrooms
The teachers and I will work together to make class assignments. Decisions we make with regard to your child's future placement reflect our best judgment as to where individual children will be the most successful. While we do not accept requests for specific teachers, you are welcome and encouraged to share with us any information you feel would be helpful in determining your child's placement.

If you are interested in giving us information that will help with the placement of your child, you may pick up a "Parental Input" form in the office. The last date to submit this form is Friday, May 23rd. Class lists will be posted after 5:00 p.m. on August 20th, the day before school begins.

ART SHOW AND BOOK FAIRE
You are invited to an evening in the GLC on Thursday, April 24th at 6pm. There will be an art exhibition by Ms. Hansen and our children. Also, Mrs. Barnes will be selling a selection of books from Linden Tree Bookstore.
This is a chance to check out the renovation plans for the library and view some of your children's technology work. For the children, there will be an ice cream social, i.e. a FREE Ice Cream!!

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
The Student Council has begun its Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Money raised goes to research in finding a cure for these blood cancers, the number one killing disease of children.
Students may donate change, bills, and/or checks payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and bring them to his/her classroom. The fundraiser will run for three weeks, ending on Friday, May 9th.

This Friday, April 25th, we will have a "Donate a Dollar, Wear a Hat Day." Students must donate a dollar in order to wear a hat/small cap. This is not a "funny hat" day. This is in honor and support of children and young adults who wear hats every day due to hair loss from their cancer treatments.

SPRING DANCE
Come along and groove to "The Action Figures" at the Family Spring Dance on Friday, May 9th, 2008 7-9pm.
If you would like to dine too, there is an optional BBQ dinner for $6 per adult and $4 per child before the dance at 5.30pm. Sign up online at www.nimitzpta.org/spring08/ or look for 'the flyer in this week's blue folder and return it with payment to the office before May 7th. For more info, email springdance@nimitzpta.org.

KID'S ART COMPETITION
Create a design for us to use at the Spring Dance. The Action Figures will be returning to perform on Friday, May 9th, and the winning design will be painted on the back wall of the stage. Be creative and bring your design to the ice cream social and the winner will be chosen by Ms. Hansen. Come and enjoy!

MUSIC EDUCATION AT NIMITZ SCHOOL
Nimitz participates in the Music for Minors (MFM) program, a non-profit organization, which trains volunteers to teach music in elementary grade classrooms.
The mission of MFM is to nurture in children a lifelong love of music and we need your help in keeping the music alive at our school. Each year parents take the fall training class, consisting of 55 hours of hands-on training. They then have access to workshops and resources through MFM, which they use in their teaching at Nimitz.

Our MFM docents at Nimitz this year are Mrs. Hoff, Mrs. Heimgartner, Mrs. Jullian, Ms Kim, Mrs. Lampman, Mrs. Marimuthu, Mrs. Poulos, Mr. Salveson and Mrs. Virmani. These trained volunteers visit the primary grade classrooms for one-half hour to sing, play instruments, dance and conduct a variety of other musical activities.

If you are thinking about ways to get more involved in your child's classroom, and if you enjoy music, please consider becoming a MFM docent. Visit a music class and enjoy seeing a music docent in action. Call Mrs. Lampman at 650-854-5004, to set up a time for a classroom visit. Find out more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity by attending our Volunteer Information Meeting.

Thursday, May 8, 11:00 AM-12:00 PM
