TRAFFIC SAFETY
Please slow down and use extra caution when driving your students to and from school. One of our Nimitz students was hit by a car on Monday while walking in the crosswalk on Cheyenne Drive.
Thankfully, she is okay. Please stop when you see a child entering a crosswalk. Also, please remind your student to follow the directions of the crossing guard and to be extra careful when walking or biking to school.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
On Monday, April 21st, the Student Council will begin its Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Money raised goes to research in finding a cure for these blood cancers, the number one killing disease of children. Students may donate change, bills, and/or checks payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and bring them to his/her classroom. The fundraiser will run for three weeks, ending on Friday, May 9th.

On Friday, April 25th, we will have a "Donate a Dollar, Wear a Hat Day." Students must donate a dollar in order to wear a hat/small cap. This is not a "funny hat" day. This is in honor and support of children and young adults who wear hats every day due to hair loss from their cancer treatments.

LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found bins are overflowing! Please remember to check the bags located near the restrooms that are full of shirts, jackets and lunchboxes. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity during the April break. We would like to suggest that all items that children bring to school be labeled, so they could be returned in case they are lost and found.

SPIRITWEAR SALE - LAST CHANCE THIS YEAR!
Orders for Nimitz Spiritwear tee shirts, shorts and flannel pants are due tomorrow, Friday, April 11th. Extra forms are available in the office.
Don't miss your chance to get a tie-die shirt with the Nimitz Dolphin logo, which can be a great class souvenir for end-of-year autographs by classmates and teachers! All Spiritwear orders are due tomorrow, Friday, April 11th.

PARENT SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED!
It is still not too late to take the Nimitz parent survey. We have extended the deadline to submit your survey to Friday, April 11th to make sure we hear from as many of you as possible.
The survey is available online in English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese at: http://www.nimitzpta.org/parentsurvey

Don't miss out on this opportunity to provide us with valuable feedback about our school. Paper copies in English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese can be obtained by filling out the green form available in the office. Thanks to those of you who have already completed the survey!

SPRING DANCE
Let's get ready to rock...the Spring Dance will be held on Friday, May 9th, featuring "The Action Figures." Be sure to save the date.
Volunteer to help by signing up online at http://www.nimitzpta.org/volunteer07/ . For more information on the Spring Dance and to RSVP online for the All-You-Can-Eat Dinner, go to: Nimitz PTA Spring Dance page.

ART EXHIBITION AND BOOK FAIRE
You are invited to an evening in the GLC on Thursday, April 24th at 6pm. There will be an art exhibition by Ms. Hansen and our children. Also, Mrs. Barnes will be selling a selection of books from Linden Tree Bookstore.
This is a chance to check out the renovation plans for the library and view some of your children's technology work. For the children, there will be an ice cream social, i.e. a FREE Ice Cream!!

KID'S ART COMPETITION
Create a design for us to use at the Spring Dance. The Action Figures will be returning to perform on May 9th, and the winning design will be painted on the back wall of the stage. Be creative and bring your design to the ice cream social and the winner will be chosen by Ms. Hansen. Come and enjoy!

ENROLLMENT FOR NEXT YEAR
Please make sure to complete the green enrollment form sent home last week. It is very important that we receive a form from each family regarding your enrollment plans for next year. This allows the school district and our school to determine our enrollment numbers for the next school year. All forms must be returned. If we do not receive this information from your family, we will be contacting you. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

BEFORE YOU MAKE TRAVEL PLANS
At the end of the school year, a student must be in attendance on the last day of school to retain his/her place on the roster for the following year. For this school year, students must be in school on June 12, 2008, to retain their space for the 2008/09 school year. At the beginning of the school year, a student must be in attendance on the first day of school or they will not retain their place on the roster. When you are making travel plans, please consider the possible ramifications. If you have any questions, please contact Student Assignment at (408) 252-3000, ext 110.

STAR TESTING APRIL 28th - MAY 9th
(Makeup Testing: May 13th -May 16th)

The STAR Testing dates are being published so that parents can plan ahead. STAR Testing will be held from April 28, 2008 through May 9, 2008 for grades 2-5. Your child will need to take the entire test in order to receive complete STAR scores. You can help prepare your child for the test by ensuring your child goes to bed on time, eats a good breakfast, and leaves for school with a positive attitude. Please do not schedule family trips or make appointments during this time.

SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD
BECOME A STRONG READER

There are many steps you can take to help your child become a strong reader. Here are a few:
  • Make reading a regular part of your child?s day. Try to make sure he reads at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Make sure you have reading materials your child enjoys all around the house.
  • Make sure your child sees you reading something (newspaper, magazine, book) nearly every day.
  • Make sure to provide a comfortable place at home for your child to read.
  • Make regular trips to the library and encourage your child to check out all types of age-appropriate reading materials.
  • Make sure to read together. Ask questions about the stories you read together and give your child time to answer.
  • Enroll your child in summer reading activities at your local library.

CUSD STRATEGIC PLAN 2008-2011

The Cupertino Union School District is in the process of developing the 2008-2011 Strategic Plan. This document identifies the main areas that the district will be focusing on for the next three school years. The Board of Education would like to solicit feedback from the community regarding the plan. Interested community members are invited to provide their input during two public hearings to be held on April 22, 2008 and May 13, 2008. Both of these hearings will be part of the regularly scheduled Board of Education meetings and will start at 6:30 p.m. The Board of Education meetings are held at the district office, which is located at 10301 Vista Drive in Cupertino.

A draft version of the 2008-2011 Strategic Plan is available on the district's website at www.cupertino.k12.ca.us, or by calling Jeremy Nishihara at (408) 252-3000, Extension 323.
