This will be an opportunity for Nimitz students to raise funds for
our school by walking laps around the track. Children will be sponsored
per lap or for a total number of laps. Look for the sponsor card in
this week's blue folder.
STATE BUDGET CRISIS AND EDUCATION
As you may already be aware, the state is facing a $14 Billion budget
crisis, and this amount seems to grow every week. In an effort to
keep the Nimitz Elementary School community informed, a letter from
the Superintendent outlining the specific details of the budget crisis
is included in this week's blue folder. Please take a few moments
to read it over. Here at Nimitz, we are hoping for the best, but
we need to plan for the worst. As a result, we are already exploring
ways on how to weather the potential upcoming budget cuts. The district
and this school site will put out additional information as it becomes
available. In the meantime, you are encouraged to contact the Governor
and your state legislators, and tell them to make education funding a
priority. The district has posted the contact information for our
state representatives and a sample letter at
www.cupertino.k12.ca.us.
Nimitz' students and staff are fortunate to have the support of our
fantastic parent community. Let's work together to get the message out
to the Governor and our state representatives that our children's
education cannot be compromised.
HEALTHY CHOICES FOR SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS
Our school district has developed a Wellness policy addressing nutrition
and physical activity in compliance with Federal guidelines. With the
school district's new Health and Wellness Policy that promotes a healthy
lifestyle, Nimitz is encouraging healthy treats for classroom celebrations
and birthdays.
|
Some healthy options are vegetables, fruit, cheese and crackers, bagels
and cream cheese, fruit smoothies, granola bars, or non-edible treats.
If you would like to bring in a treat for the class and are not sure what
to bring, communicate with your child's teachers. With the new wellness
policy, there are restrictions on parties and food.
Parents are invited to join us in celebrating Read Across America
Day on Monday, March 3rd, from 10:45-11:15am on the Nimitz School Field.
Nimitz students and parents are encouraged to bring a book, a blanket
and pillows. In the event of rain, this activity will be moved to
the classrooms and/or the GLC.

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT AT HYDE
Fifth grade parents are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday,
March 4th from 7:00-8:00 pm at Hyde in their multi-use room.
Information will be presented regarding the programs being offered
to incoming sixth graders. You will also have an opportunity to
ask any questions you may have regarding middle school. This will be
an information meeting only; therefore, we ask that only parents attend.
If you wish to order a class portrait, please complete the order envelope
and return it with your payment to your student's teacher.
We are in need of two parents to help with pictures. If you are available,
please call the office at 736-2180.
ART VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you have any extra time on Thursdays or Fridays, please consider helping out
in the art room. Art has an important place in your child's education.
We are lucky at Nimitz to have a wonderful art teacher, Angela Hansen.
If you have some extra time and would like to help out, please contact
Angela Hansen at
hansen_angela@cupertino.k12.ca.us.
They are doing the best they can to keep the children safe and need
your cooperation, if not your respect and admiration!
In the mornings when you are dropping off your children, please have their backpacks, lunch, and other belongings in the car, not in the trunk. This will help expedite traffic flow during the morning rush. Also, please stop when you see a child entering the crosswalk.
Students can take daily laps around the field during lunchtime. This helps
keep our students in shape as they strive to reach their goal. This program
is not possible without parent support. We need volunteers to help out
during lunch (11:25-12:45), one day each week or every other week.
If you are available to punch cards or help supervise students,
please email/call Tracy Burriss at
burriss_tracy@cupertino.k12.ca.us
or ph. (408) 732-4563. The Running Club would not be possible without
the help of many parent volunteers who help keep things moving!
