PARENTING CLASS RETURNS IN JANUARY
Pat Belvel will be teaching a class on parenting skills beginning on Monday, January 28 and running for five weeks. Classes will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the GLC on Monday nights through March 3. (There will be no class during the February vacation.)

This class focuses on positive parenting skills and provides specific strategies for dealing with problem situations. Pat taught this class here at Nimitz two years ago, and it was received very positively.

A flier with more information and a sign-up form will be sent home this week. Be sure to return the form as soon as possible as space for the class is limited, and it will be open to other schools in the district.

WINTER SING CONCERT
The teachers and students of rooms 3, 4, 5, 6, 30, and 907 have been working hard to prepare their music program, which they will perform on Wednesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the GLC.
The classes will entertain us with lively songs in celebration of the holidays. All students need to stay for the entire performance, as there is an all school sing for the concluding song. Parents are encouraged to join in too!

EMPHASIZE "GIVING" RATHER THAN
"GETTING" THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

To be successful in school, children must learn to share and become less selfish. A little philanthropy - giving to others - will help your child do this. There are many ways parents can promote giving this season and all year long. Here are a few ideas:

  • Introduce the word philanthropy. It means sharing your time or talent to help other people.
  • Identify volunteers and other people in your community who give. Talk about how special and important these people are.
  • Let your child see you giving and let her participate. Take her with you when you volunteer. Ask what charities she'd like to help.
  • Help your child make simple gifts to give to family and friends or to distribute at a shelter. She'll discover the joy of giving something she's made.
  • Have your child gather toys and clothes she's willing to donate to a charity. Be sure to take her with you when you drop them off.
  • Cook soup or bake something together to take to a sick or elderly neighbor.
  • Praise your child when she gives to others. Point out how good it makes her feel to share with other people and to know she has made a difference in someone's life.

STOP GERMS FROM SPREADING!
The Cupertino Union School District joins with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and other school districts in launching Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools so that we can reduce the chances of getting sick and help limit the spread of germs. By doing a few simple things, we can stop the spread of germs:
  • Wash your hands often using soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when coughing and sneezing.
  • Throw used tissues into the trash and then wash your hands.
  • Cough into your sleeve.
  • Stay home if you are sick and stay away from others as much as possible.
  • Keep children home if they are sick.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
When to wash your hands:
  • When your hands are dirty
  • Before and after you eat
  • After you cough, sneeze, or use the bathroom
  • Before you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • After you touch dirty tissues

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES
The elementary school physical fitness activities and games provide an opportunity to keep our students healthy and fit. In order to ensure that your son or daughter is able to enjoy the full benefits of participating in these activities, the following guidelines are recommended:
  • Students should wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict or limit movement.
  • Tennis shoes should have a low heel and provide a snug fit.
  • Flip flops, sandals and loose fitting tennis shoes/street shoes should not be worn due to safety concerns.
  • A sweatshirt or jacket should be provided for cold days.
