FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT CAPTIVATED STUDENTS!
Last Wednesday, the Ready, Set, Go! Family Science Night was a lively evening of fun scientific exploration. Students engaged in activities such as learning to use a pedometer, making a pulse meter, playing nutrition bingo, testing their muscle strength and lung capacity, and designing their own exercise course. A big thank you to Mr. Warner for orgainizing the event and to all the teachers who volunteered at the stations. This was a fun way for students to experience hands-on science activities while learning about physical fitness and nutrition.

THANKSGIVING FEAST
Join us in bringing Nimitz students' experiences from around the world (or right next-door!).

THE DOLPHIN WILL NOT BE
PUBLISHED NEXT WEEK DUE
TO THE THANKSGIVING RECESS

SHOW YOUR SCHOOL SPIRIT: SPIRITWEAR SALE ENDS SOON!
Orders for Nimitz Spiritwear products are due tomorrow, Friday, November 16th. No late orders can be accepted. This year's design features a 50th anniversary edition of the Nimitz Dolphin logo.

DIWALI LUNCHEON
The entire Nimitz staff would like to thank our Asian Indian community for treating us to a delicious lunch buffet in celebration of Diwali. The GLC was beautifully decorated and there were over 50 delightful dishes to choose from!

EATING LUNCH OUTSIDE
Now that the weather is getting cooler, please send your children to school with a coat, sweatshirt or extra layers of clothing. We will continue to eat outside as long as it is not too cold, windy or raining.

RUNNING CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Horn and Nimitz parent and teacher, Tracy Burriss, we have a Nimitz Running Club where students can take daily laps around the field during lunchtime.
This helps keep our students in shape as they strive to reach their goal. This program is not possible without parent support. We need a volunteer to help out during lunch (11:25-12:45), on Wednesdays. If you are available to punch cards or help supervise students, please email/call Tracy Burriss at burriss_tracy@cupertino.k12.ca.us or ph. (408) 732-4563. The Running Club would not be possible without the help of many parent volunteers who help keep things moving!

INDEPENDENT STUDY
If you plan to be away from school for a minimum of five school days and a maximum of ten school days, please contact your child's teacher at least one week ahead of your departure date to arrange for a special Independent Study (IS) Contract. This way your child can keep up with class. The following guidelines must be followed:
  • A student must be enrolled for three consecutive weeks before an IS contract can be initiated.
  • The contract and homework must be returned the first day back to school with all the work complete, so days missed do not count as unexcused absences.
  • Students who are absent for more than ten consecutive days will be dropped from the school roster. When the student returns, if space is available at his or her school, the student will be reinstated. If no space is available, the student will be assigned to another school in the district where space is available.

NURSE'S NOTES: ILLNESS GUIDELINES
The decision to keep your child home is not an easy one to make. Keeping ill children home from school is intended to protect, not only the ill child, but also classmates and instructional staff. This note outlines the criteria for keeping students home when they are ill and for sending children home when they appear to be suffering from a contagious or infectious disease (Ed. Code section 48211, 48212). Your child needs to stay home from school for the following reasons:
  • Temperature of 100 degrees or higher. If the child has had a temperature, he/she should remain home until it has been normal (98.6 degrees) for 24 hours.
  • Runny nose with green discharge
  • Diarrhea (must remain home until no symptoms for 24 hours)
  • Nausea or vomiting (must remain home until no symptoms for 24 hours)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Undiagnosed rash (rashes need to be verified by your doctor that they are non-contagious; a note is needed)
If you do not have health insurance, the Children's Health Initiative of Santa Clara County will help your family obtain free and low-cost health, dental and vision insurance. There are three insurance programs:
  • Medi-Cal,
  • Healthy Families and
  • Healthy Kids.
Please call 1-888-244-5222 to speak to an intake worker (there are many languages spoken) who will help you find a program for your child.

McAULIFFE MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT

McAuliffe School, one of the district's four alternative programs, offers a small and educationally alternative school program for students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The program continues the elementary school philosophy while extending the expectations and responsibilities commensurate with the growth and development of children at middle school age. Parents remain integrally involved in the program, making possible diverse and exciting educational opportunities for the students.

Please join us for a Middle School Information Night on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 from 7 - 9 p.m. in the McAuliffe Performing Arts Center (PAC). The teachers will present an overview of the program (goals and curriculum) and you will have the opportunity to see the classrooms and meet in small groups with McAuliffe Middle School alumni who are currently attending high school or college.

Parents of children of all ages and in any grade are whole-heartedly welcome to attend, as we know that learning about educational opportunities is a process. Fifth grade students are welcome to attend as well. Bring your curiosity and questions, and join us for an evening of information and discussion of the McAuliffe Middle School program.
