Share a favorite dish, dessert, or drink from your culture (including
American) with all the students during their lunch on Tuesday,
November 20th. After the students finish their lunch period (around 12:45),
students' families are invited to come and share the remaining food.
Sign up with the flyer in the blue folder this week (extra flyers are available in the office) or online at http://www.nimitzpta.org/feast/. If you are interested in volunteering to help setup, serve, or clean up at the Thanksgiving Feast, you can also let us know through the flyer or online site. If you have questions, please email diversity@mrjim.com. -Nimitz Diversity Committee ATTENDANCE REPORTING
The Education Code in California requires students to attend school
daily and be on time. If your child is not at school, you are required
to report the absence to the school. We have a 24-hour line for this
purpose. Please report your child's absence each morning that your
child is absent before 9:00 a.m. by calling 736-2180 ext. 6. Include
the student's name (please spell the last name), room number, the
reason for absence and your relation to the child.
Dentist and doctor appointments disrupt student learning. When a child is absent or late to school, they miss important information and assignments that are sometimes difficult to make up. We require a note from the doctor or dentist when students miss school because of appointments. All other reasons are unexcused.

This program is not limited to collecting
spare change; dollars make an even bigger difference! Each class will submit
their collections to a large container in the office. All of the proceeds
from the fundraiser will go to the Red Cross.
HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
Please help Nimitz School give to those less fortunate, as we participate in
the Second Harvest Food Bank's drive to gather non-perishable food items.
The drive will begin on Monday, November 5th and run through Friday,
November 9th. Students and parents can bring non-perishable food items to
the bins located in the GLC. Some examples of food items are canned food,
cereal, sugar, pasta, peanut butter, flour, etc. Please do not bring milk,
frozen foods or items that require refrigeration. Please check expiration
dates before submitting your donations.
SPIRITWEAR SALE
Nimitz sweatshirts, tee shirts and sweatpants are available for
sale. Look for the order forms in this week's blue folder. We will
accept orders through Friday, November 16th.
Your participation and support will enrich this historic community
event. Come early for pre-dedication services. Special guests
include: Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter, Rear Admiral Joseph
Kernan, and a fly-over by the U.S. Navy. If you are a veteran or active
duty military, please stop by the Welcome Table so you can be
acknowledged. For more information, please visit
http://www.cupertinoveteransmemorial.org.

We are looking for a volunteer who can help supervise the children and
traffic in the back of the school (Cascade Drive).
This will be after school on Tuesdays from 1:25-1:40pm. If you are
available to help, please contact the office.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
It is a good time to review our disaster preparedness after having
the 5.6 earthquake last week. In the case of an emergency, we know
you want your child and the school as prepared as possible. Nimitz
has an emergency plan in place. Each classroom has been equipped with
first aid supplies, flashlights, and other essential equipment. Your
question may be, "What should I, as the parent, do in the event
of an emergency?" First remain calm, because your child at school
is probably in one of the safest places to be in the event of an
emergency. We are well prepared to take care of your child.
Twenty Minutes A Day By Richard Peck
Read to your children
Twenty minutes a day; You have the time, And so do they.
Read while the laundry is in the machine. |
Hide the remote,
Let the computer games cool, For one day your children will be off to school. "Remedial?" "Gifted?" You have the choice. Let them hear their first tales In the sound of your voice.
Read in the morning, Turn the pages together, Sitting close as you'll fit, Till a small voice beside you says, "Hey, don't quit."
DISTRICT NEWS
SEEKING SUPPORT FOR DISTRICT MATH INITIATIVE
Thanks to a $200,000 Microsoft gift, the Cupertino Educational
Endowment Foundation (CEEF) will support a new district math initiative
that will include professional development for a district-wide network
of lead math teachers.
In addition, CEEF is planning to gather additional support from local technology corporations who have indicated special interest in strengthening mathematics programs throughout the district. These proposals will request funding to help extend professional development opportunities for teaches, math enrichment activities for students, and a math speaker series for parents. CEEF is seeking help from district parents who would be willing to write or sign letters of endorsement to their employers on behalf of the initiative. If you are interested in helping, please send your name, address, email address, contact number, company name, and child's school to innovate@ceefcares.org. OUT OF DISTRICT TRANSFERS 2008-2009
Due to increased enrollment, the district has not taken any new
out-of-district students for the last two years. Therefore, we will
not be accepting out-of-district transfer requests during the open
enrollment period in February.
If, after the first ten days of school, there is space available for out-of-district students, we will have a one-week registration period and hold a lottery to determine the order of registration for all students who apply during the week. This applies to all out-of-district requests including alternative programs. Questions should be referred to the Student Assignment Office at (408) 252-3000, Extension 110. | |||||||
