Please join us Wednesday, November 7th from 6:30-8:00 pm in the GLC for
an evening of fun, hands-on science provided by the Children's Discovery
Museum. This exciting new Family Science Night explores the science of
physical fitness and healthy nutrition with fun-filled activities. Children
and adults alike will learn about bones, joints, muscles, lungs and the
heart while dancing, testing, racing, and watching. A big thank you to
the Nimitz PTA for funding this event. We all look forward to seeing
you there.
Share a favorite dish, dessert, or drink from your culture (including
American) with all the students during their lunch on Tuesday,
November 20th. After the students finish their lunch period (around 12:45),
students' families are invited to come and share the remaining food.
Sign up with the flyer in the blue folder this week (extra flyers are available in the office) or online at http://www.nimitzpta.org/feast/. If you are interested in volunteering to help setup, serve, or clean up at the Thanksgiving Feast, you can also let us know through the flyer or online site. If you have questions, please email diversity@mrjim.com. -Nimitz Diversity Committee |
This program is not limited to collecting
spare change; dollars make an even bigger difference! Each class will submit
their collections to a large container in the office. All of the proceeds
from the fundraiser will go to the Red Cross.
HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
Please help Nimitz School give to those less fortunate, as we participate in
the Second Harvest Food Bank's drive to gather non-perishable food items.
The drive will begin on Monday, November 5th and run through Friday,
November 9th. Students and parents can bring non-perishable food items to
the bins located in the GLC. Some examples of food items are canned food,
cereal, sugar, pasta, peanut butter, flour, etc. Please do not bring milk,
frozen foods or items that require refrigeration. Please check expiration
dates before submitting your donations.
If you wish to order a portrait, please complete the order
envelope and return it with your payment to your student's teacher.
We are in need of three parent volunteers to help with pictures. If
you are available, please call the office at 736-2180.

REFLECTIONS CONTEST
The winners of the Reflections Art Competition will be announced at an
assembly on Monday, November 5th. Thank you to our local artists, Tony
Dunnigan (graphic designer) and Eleanor Rieffel (author), for taking
the time to judge our competition. We had 69 fabulous entries.
PRESENTATION ON INTERNET SAFETY
Homestead PTSA is sponsoring "Teaching your Students Cyber Safety"
presented by Sunnyvale Public Safety on November 5th, 6:00 p.m. in
the Homestead High School Auditorium. Learn tips and guidelines to
help keep your children safe in our ever-changing world of Internet
accessibility. This presentation is open to the public and will
be followed by the regular PTSA meeting.
-Donna Verna, Homestead PTSA President
Your participation and support will enrich this historic community event. Come
early for pre-dedication services. Special guests include: Secretary of the
Navy Donald Winter, Rear Admiral Joseph Kernan, and a fly-over by the U.S.
Navy. If you are a veteran or active duty military, please stop by the Welcome
Table so you can be acknowledged. For more information, please visit
http://www.cupertinoveteransmemorial.org.
We are looking for a volunteer who can help supervise the children and
traffic in the back of the school (Cascade Drive).
This will be after school on Tuesdays from 1:25-1:40pm. If you are
available to help, please contact the office.
GOAL SETTING CONFERENCES REVIEW
The goals set during the October Parent-Teacher conferences can be a powerful
tool for academic progress and self-esteem for your child. These goals
need to be reviewed on a regular basis and in a positive manner. Here
are some ways to keep those goals in the forefront:

DISTRICT NEWS
GATE REFERRAL PROCESS The focus of Cupertino's Gifted and Talented Education Program is to identify and serve those students who have demonstrated exceptional intellectual ability and outstanding academic achievement. Referrals for Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) testing may be initiated by teachers, parents, or the student. GATE testing of CUSD grade 3 and above students will take place during Spring (March-April) 2008. This will be the only GATE testing offered during the 2007-2008 year. If you have questions about the screening process, please call the GATE office at (408) 252-3000, Extension 199, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. or the GATE website at: http://www.cupertino.k12.ca.us

SEEKING SUPPORT FOR DISTRICT MATH INITIATIVE
Thanks to a $200,000 Microsoft gift, the Cupertino Educational Endowment
Foundation (CEEF) will support a new district math initiative that will
include professional development for a district-wide network of lead math teachers.
In addition, CEEF is planning to gather additional support from local technology corporations who have indicated special interest in strengthening mathematics programs throughout the district. These proposals will request funding to help extend professional development opportunities for teaches, math enrichment activities for students, and a math speaker series for parents. CEEF is seeking help from district parents who would be willing to write or sign letters of endorsement to their employers on behalf of the initiative. If you are interested in helping, please send your name, address, email address, contact number, company name, and child's school to innovate@ceefcares.org, by November 9, 2007. | ||||||||
