HALLOWEEN PARADE
The Nimitz Halloween parade will take place Wednesday, October 31st at 8:15 a.m. on the blacktop. We'd love to have you join us.
Students will wear their costumes to school. Please be sure that costumes are comfortable, provide good visibility, and are easy for your child to remove. All costumes must be non-violent in nature and follow our Zero Tolerance policy. Weapons (guns, swords, knives, martial arts weapons, etc.), fake blood, and hairspray containers must be left at home. Children must bring a set of school clothes in a bag, clearly labeled with name and room number.

WHAT MAKES STUDENTS WANT TO LEARN?
All children have an intrinsic or natural desire to learn. In a very literal way, we are "programmed" to be seekers of meaning, and to try to understand ourselves and the world we live in. In most children, the process of learning brings about great joy.
One of our most important jobs as teachers and parents is to maintain in our children their natural desire to learn. Some ways we can do this:
  • Model learning as adults: discuss with children the things and ideas that fascinate or confuse us.
  • Allow children ample time to explore topics of interest.
  • Don't be afraid to answer "I don't know" when children ask questions that we don,t have an answer to, but follow that up with "How can we find out?"
  • Make learning and school relevant to children's lives. We should always have a good answer when children ask, "Why do I have to learn this?"
  • Don't turn learning into a competition. This changes the child's focus from their own learning to how they compare against others.
  • Don't overemphasize grades. This can have the same effect as competition, and it shifts the student's motivation from intrinsic to extrinsic. Some children get very good at figuring out how to get a good grade, but lose the fact that school is supposed to be about learning, not grades or scores, and there's an important difference.

PICTURE DAY
Bud White will be here Tuesday, November 6th to take pictures. Order envelopes will be distributed to students the Thursday before.
If you wish to order a portrait, please complete the order envelope and return it with your payment to your student's teacher. We are in need of three parent volunteers to help with pictures. If you are available, please call the office at 736-2180.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED TUESDAY AFTER SCHOOL
We are looking for a volunteer who can help supervise the children and traffic in the back of the school (Cascade Drive). This will be after school on Tuesdays from 1:25-1:40pm. If you are available to help, please contact the office.

NIMITZ 50th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Thank you to PTA and the Nimitz staff who helped make our 50th birthday celebration so special. All students and staff wore matching Nimitz 50th t-shirts provided by PTA. Our celebration began with a flag ceremony with the military color guard and an all school assembly with videos about Admiral Nimitz, the USS Nimitz and a video made for us by Nimitz Elementary in Honolulu, Hawaii. This was followed by all our students singing "Happy Birthday" around our beautiful cupcake display, and ended with learning about the customs that make birthdays fun all over the world. Finally, the celebration continued at night with our 50's dance. Thanks to all who helped make this anniversary such a special event.

RED RIBBON WEEK
This week is National Red Ribbon Week. The emphasis of the week is to demonstrate our commitment to a drug-free and healthy lifestyle.
You can support our curriculum through discussions at home on values. A strong value system can empower students to make educated decisions that will make them able to say "No" to the peer pressures involved in drug abuse. A strong value system can empower students to make educated decisions rather than simply be influenced by peer pressure. Many thanks to PTA for supporting this program.

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL UPDATE
Our School Site Council met on October 11th. The following was discussed:
  • Budget - Purchase of books for library using Block Grant
  • Title One Plan
  • DAC Report
  • Brainstorming on ways to improve school
