BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
Please join us tonight, September 27th for our annual Back-to-School Night. Please note the change in schedule: 4th and 5th grade classes will meet at 6:00 PM and 1st-3rd grade classes will meet at 6:30 PM.
The purpose of Back-to-School Night is to begin the important communication link between home and school. Parents will meet with teachers in their classrooms to discuss their educational programs, learn about the school day, and find out how to help their child be successful in school.

This is a very important evening designed for PARENTS ONLY. Children are not allowed to wait for parents on the playground or in the corridors as there will be no supervision, and the noise is a distraction to those listening to the presentations. Please make arrangements now for babysitters to watch your children at home. Thank you for your cooperation.

TRAFFIC SAFETY IN BACK OF SCHOOL
Please slow down and use extra caution when driving your students to and from school. Please remember to be respectful of our neighbors.
We have received complaints that parents are parking and blocking their driveways. Please remember that double parking is never allowed. Be respectful of our teachers who are supervising the parking lot and the traffic on Cascade. They are doing the best they can to keep the children safe and need your cooperation, if not your respect and admiration!

NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY,
SEPTEMBER 28TH
STAFF LEARNING DAY
PARENT CONFERENCES
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming goal setting conferences, which will take place October 8-16. All grades will be dismissed at 12:25 pm.
Please arrange to have your child picked up promptly. Trimester conferences are an opportunity to:
  • Share information about student strengths, interests, and needs.
  • Establish a caring and collaborative relationship.
  • Develop mutual goals for student learning and behavior.
Teachers, parents, and students (when appropriate) set goals directly related to district standards for student learning as well as specific social, emotional, and behavioral goals appropriate to the student and the grade level. They also identify strategies to support student attainment of grade level standards. In addition, the goal setting conference held early in the year allows teachers and parents to identify students at risk of retention and design interventions to help them meet grade level standards.

NIMITZ CULTURAL FESTIVAL
DVD's from the Nimitz Cultural Festival last May are available in the office for $10.

NIMITZ YAHOO GROUP
For those of you who have filled out the Email Group form, you will be receiving an invitation to join the new Nimitz Elementary School Yahoo Group. This group has been created for official announcements from the school staff and PTA to the Nimitz Elementary School community. It will also be used for distribution of the Dolphin newsletter via email. No discussion will be allowed on this list. The list of emails is run and maintained by Nimitz Elementary School staff. To join, please follow the simple instructions in the Yahoo invitation email. If you do not join the Yahoo group, you will not receive the Dolphin Newsletter email.

The Dolphin Newsletter will be emailed to parents who have signed up and joined the Nimitz Elementary School Yahoo group in October. In addition, a paper copy of the Dolphin will be sent home with the youngest or only child of each Nimitz family. This will greatly help the school by saving over 15,000 sheets of legal-sized blue paper for the school year! Please note that all communication from teachers will continue to be sent home with each child. If you would like to be included in the parent email group, the forms are available in the office. Previous newsletters can be found at: http://www.nimitzpta.org/newsletter/.

Our newly elected officers are:

NIMITZ 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Nimitz is 50 this year and we have a great day of events planned to celebrate this occasion on Friday, October 19th, during the school day and in the evening, too. For more information on how you can help, please contact Susannah Vaughan at pta@mrjim.com or by calling (408) 732-1458. Also, if you are in contact with any old students from the school or retired staff, please invite them to the school to join the festivities.

NIMITZ PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
All Nimitz students can benefit from parent volunteer help. If you have a few extra minutes, consider helping the Running Club, Copy Center, Library, Crosswalk Guards, etc. Some volunteer positions can be done whenever you have a few minutes (like after student drop-off or before pick-up) and do not require any commitment other then an initial training. If you have not already, please sign up online at www.nimitzpta.org or fill out a Nimitz Volunteer Form in the office.

REQUIREMENT FOR VOLUNTEERS
Please remember that adults volunteering in any capacity, including noontime supervisors, classroom volunteers and field trip drivers, must have a current (dated within the last four years) negative tuberculin test on file with the school. The Intradermal Mantoux PPD Skin Test is given at most medical clinics. A voucher from the Cupertino Medical Clinic is available in the office. The test costs $15.00. Please bring documentation of your negative PPD Skin Test or X-Ray to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you!

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCHES
If your child was receiving a free or reduced lunch last year, your child will continue to receive the free or reduced lunch until Friday, September 28th. You need to reapply for the free and reduced lunch before September 28th in order to receive these lunches this year.
If you do not turn in the application, your child will need to pay for their lunch. Also, if there is a situation that you may now qualify for a free or reduced lunch, please be sure to turn in an application as well. Lunch applications are printed in the back of the Opening Day Packet booklet and extra copies are available in the office.
