The purpose of Back-to-School Night is to begin the important
communication link between home and school.
Parents will meet with teachers in their classrooms to discuss their
educational programs, learn about the school day, and find out how to
help their child be successful in school.
This is a very important evening designed for PARENTS ONLY. Children are not allowed to wait for parents on the playground or in the corridors as there will be no supervision, and the noise is a distraction to those listening to the presentations. Please make arrangements now for babysitters to watch your children at home. Thank you for your cooperation. NIMITZ 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Nimitz is 50 this year and we have a great day of events planned to
celebrate this occasion on Friday, October 19th, during the school
day and in the evening, too. For more information on how you
can help, please contact Susannah Vaughan at
pta@mrjim.com or by calling (408) 732-1458. Also, if you are in contact
with any old students from the school or retired staff, please invite them to
the school to join the festivities.
NIMITZ CULTURAL FESTIVAL
DVD's from the Nimitz Cultural Festival last May are available
in the office for $10.
FREE AND REDUCED LUNCHES
If your child was receiving a free or reduced lunch last year, your
child will continue to receive the free or reduced lunch until
Friday, September 28th. You need to reapply for the free and
reduced lunch before September 28th in order to receive these
lunches this year.
|
If you do not turn in the application, your child will need to
pay for their lunch. Also, if there is a situation that you may
now qualify for a free or reduced lunch, please be sure to turn
in an application as well. Lunch applications are printed in
the back of the Opening Day Packet booklet and extra copies are
available in the office.
VISITING CAMPUS
ALL VISITORS ON CAMPUS or entering classrooms as volunteers or meeting
with teachers MUST sign in at the office and obtain a visitor's badge
when school is in session. For the safety of all, we need to know who
is on campus. The only exceptions are at student arrival and dismissal
times. If you are taking your child out of school for any reason,
ALWAYS sign your child out from school through the office and back
in when he/she returns.
Please remember that adults volunteering in any capacity, including noontime supervisors, classroom volunteers and field trip drivers, must have a current (dated within the last four years) negative tuberculin test on file with the school. The Intradermal Mantoux PPD Skin Test is given at most medical clinics. A voucher from the Cupertino Medical Clinic is available in the office. The test costs $15.00. Please bring documentation of your negative PPD Skin Test or X-Ray to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you! PREPAY FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES
Locate the yellow menu and the blue pre-pay lunch envelope inside
your child's packet, which came home the first day of school.
Complete the information on the blue lunch pre-pay envelope. Record
your child's PIN somewhere handy. Enclose a check and return the envelope
to school. Post the
menu
on the refrigerator for reference. Help your
child memorize their PIN.
NIMITZ PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
All Nimitz students can benefit from parent volunteer help. If you have
a few extra minutes, consider helping the Running Club, Copy Center,
Library, Crosswalk Guards, etc.
|
|
Some volunteer positions can be done whenever you have a few minutes
(like after student drop-off or before pick-up) and do not require
any commitment other then an initial training. If you have not
already, please sign up online at
www.nimitzpta.org or fill out a Nimitz Volunteer Form in the office.
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL UPDATE
Our School Site Council met on September 13th. The following was discussed:
NewsRenew with Safeway by November 1st!
It's that time of year again when all eScrip members must
renew their commitment to shopping at Safeway. Safeway requires
all eScrip supporters to renew their commitment to them every
year. For Nimitz to continue receiving your contributions
made through your grocery shopping at Safeway, YOU MUST RENEW YOUR
COMMITMENT BY NOVEMBER 1ST. It's so easy to renew!
Choose one of these 3 easy ways!
IMPROVE YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Research shows that attendance is the single most important factor in
school success. Here's how you can improve your child's school attendance.

DISTRICT NEWS
STATE PRESCHOOL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The Cupertino Union School District is currently taking applications
for the waiting list for its free State Preschool Program. The
program, which services low-income three- and four-year-old children,
is located at Sedgwick Elementary School, 19200 Phil Lane in
Cupertino. Priority is given to children who will be four by Dec. 2.
This free, parent participation preschool offers children many exciting learning experiences including math, pre-reading, science and creative arts, as well as the opportunity to work and play in group situations. Preschool activities are designed to help children make a successful transition to kindergarten. Children attend three hours per day, five days a week. Parents interested in enrolling their children should contact Ruth Wachob at Sedgwick Elementary School, (408) 252-3103 ext. 202. ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed for the adult literacy program at
Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult and Community Education. The literacy
program, ATLAS (Academy for Teaching Literacy to Adult Students),
helps students to improve their reading, writing, and math skills.
Working with these students either on a one-to-one basis or in small
groups is very rewarding. The classes meet mornings, afternoons,
and evenings. Free training is provided for all volunteers. Please
call (408) 522-2755 for more information about this rewarding volunteer
opportunity.
