THINGS TO REMEMBER
BEFORE THE END OF THE
SCHOOL YEAR
  • Check the Lost and Found for any lost items.
  • Return all library books and school textbooks.
  • Notify the office if you will not be returning next year or will be starting late. Students return on August 23, 2007.
  • Make sure your student's Health/Enrollment Card is current with phone numbers, employment information and emergency contacts.
  • If your child has medication in the school office, please pick it up on the last day of school, Friday, June 15th.
  • All hot lunches must be pre-paid for the rest of the year. Students who owe for past lunches are expected to pay these charges prior to the last day of school. Please call the kitchen at 736-2180 x132 for your child's balance.
FIELD DAY
Fun, fitness and friendship is what it's all about! Nimitz School will have its 4th annual Field Day on Friday, June 8th.
Students will get a chance to participate in a variety of games and activities ranging from a basketball shoot and soccer dribble to obstacle courses, sack races, hula-hoops and limbo. Students will travel around the playground and field in teams, taking their turns at the various activities that have been organized by teachers, parents and support staff. Field Day reinforces the importance of physical fitness and comradeship. There are no points or scores on Field Day. All the students are winners!

NIMITZ DIVERSITY COMMITTEE
The Nimitz Diversity Committee wants suggestions from parents for children's classic stories and folk tales in other languages or translations. If you have a favorite book to suggest, please provide the information to the office, attn. Sara Biyabani. You can also send it to us online at http://www.nimitzpta.org/library/.

ATTENDANCE POLICY REMINDER
Students must be in attendance on the last day of school to guarantee their place in the district for the following school year. If a student is absent on the last day, they must be re-registered when they return. Registration will be offered at Collins Elementary from July 23rd - August 8th. In order to re-register, you must bring a current PG&E bill and one additional form of identification. If you return after August 8th, registration will be available at the Nimitz school office beginning Thursday, August 16th at 9:00 am. If space is available at Nimitz, the student will be reinstated. If no space is available, the student will be assigned to another school in the district where space is available. If a student is ill on the last day, parents must notify the school of the absence and provide documentation. If you have any questions, please contact Student Assignment at (408) 252-3000, Extension 110.

PTA NEWS
Thank you for all your help this year at school. There are so many people that have spent many hours volunteering that we would fill this page. Yesterday a handful of exceptional parents were publicly recognized for the sheer volume of hours that they have spent each week, making a difference in the lives of all our children. They include; Lenora Louie, Van Welch, Galit Lev-Ran, Anna Subia, Peggy Ngai, Bharathi Mani, Dora and James Liu, Hooi Lin Tan, Karen Chin, Annie Pfister, and Radha Theophilus. In recognition of their time and commitment, the Nimitz PTA have donated a book to the library on their behalf for all the children to enjoy.

MEDICATIONS IN THE OFFICE
Katy Waugh, RN, PHN, CNS

If you have stored your child's medications in the Nimitz Health Office, please make arrangements to take them home on the last day of school. Any medication that remains after the close of school will be discarded. If your children are attending summer school and will need the medication during the shortened day, please take it to that school site's main office on the first day of classes.

If it will be necessary for your child to receive medication during the school day next year, please pick up a blue Medication Authorization form at the school office before the last day of school, June 15th.

In order for either prescription or over-the-counter medications to be given at school, both the doctor and the parent must sign the form. When completed, bring the Medication Administration form and the medication (in the original container) to the secretaries in the school office.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me: voice-mail 408-252-3000 ext. 475 or E-mail waugh_katy@cupertino.k12.ca.us Have a happy and healthy summer!

ELIMINATE SUMMER BOREDOM BY ASSIGNING REGULAR CHORES
When kids are bored, they don't have anything meaningful to do. You can give your child something meaningful - a family chore! The "I'm bored," whining will stop. Your child will feel she's a needed family member. She'll learn new skills and feel more capable at home and school. To achieve these results:
  • Teach how to do a job before handing it over to your child.
  • Don't expect perfection. Never redo your child's work.
  • Do chores together. Don't expect your child to work alone.
  • Have fun. Play music. Sing songs together. Beat the clock. Take turns.
  • Praise your child's contribution to the family.
  • Point out a chore's natural rewards. If a child finds a coin while vacuuming, she gets to keep it. If she makes cookies, she gets to eat some of them.
  • Don't nag your child about chores. Help her make a chart where she can see what's expected of her each day.

STUDENT LUNCH ACCOUNTS

Students moving to a new school within Cupertino Union School District (CUSD) or from elementary to middle school for the 2007-2008 school year will have their remaining school lunch account balances automatically transferred to their new school cafeteria.
Money balances left in all student lunch accounts at the end of the current school year will remain in each student's name under his/her personal account and if the student moves, will follow the student to his/her new school within CUSD. On the first day of school in August, all students will be reissued their cafeteria personal identification number (PIN). Students who have moved to new schools or middle schools will be assigned a new cafeteria PIN for use during meal times. Newly assigned PIN's are connected to student's existing cafeteria lunch account balances. Parents with children moving out of the school district may request a refund of their child's existing cafeteria account balances by contacting the district Student Nutrition Services Department at (408) 252-3000, Extension 302.

K-5 SOCIAL STUDIES ADOPTION APPROVAL
On May 8, 2007, the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education approved the adoption of the teacher recommended Pearson Scott Foresman K-5 History/Social Science materials. The approval came after a yearlong process implemented by a committee of 40 district teachers representing all 20 elementary school sites. The social studies adopted materials will be used in the classrooms starting next year.

The adopted materials may be viewed online at www.cahistorysocialscience.com. The sample materials will also be available in September 2007 at our Teacher Resource Center located at 10255 North Portal Ave. in Cupertino.

CUSD ADULT ENGLISH CLASSES
Cupertino Union School District's "Community Based English Tutorial" (CBET) Program is once again sponsoring a four-week summer session of adult English classes. Proposition 227 provides funding for this program. The purpose of the CBET Program is to provide free or subsidized programs of adult English language instruction to parents or other members of the community.

Classes will be held at three of our summer school sites: DeVargas Elementary, Nimitz Elementary, and Hyde Middle. Each class is scheduled from June 25 - July 20, 2007 and will meet daily from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the elementary school sites and from 8:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. at the middle school site. The applications for the CBET Program are available at www.cupertino.k12.ca.us, or by calling (408) 252-3000, Extension 323. Space is limited, so sign up now. Classes are for adults only and no childcare will be provided.
