NIMITZ TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Mr. James Rhee has been honored by the teachers of Nimitz as the Teacher of the Year. On Tuesday, May 8th at 6:30pm at Collins Elementary (10300 N. Blaney Ave., Cupertino), Mr. Rhee will be recognized by the Board of Education for his outstanding contributions to Nimitz School and the Cupertino Union School District.
Not only is Mr. Rhee an exemplary classroom teacher, he has become a fantastic "teacher of teachers." He often takes the lead during staff development days, sharing successful, research-based strategies that he uses in his classroom. Mr. Rhee was also the principal organizer of this year's Family Math Night, and is an integral member of the Nimitz Leadership Team. Congratulations Mr. Rhee!

ENROLLMENT FOR NEXT YEAR
Please make sure to return the enrollment form that was sent home in last week's blue folder by Friday, May 18th. It is very important that we receive a form from each family regarding your enrollment plans for next year. This allows the school district and our school to determine our enrollment numbers for the next school year. All forms must be returned. If we do not receive this information from your family, we will be contacting you. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

NIMITZ CULTURAL FESTIVAL
The Diversity Committee is planning a Cultural Festival to be held Friday, June 1st at 1:00pm. The PTA is planning on producing a video of the performances. We need 3 parents who have digital video cameras and can assist with filming during the rehearsals and the actual event. If you can volunteer, please email digvid@nimitzpta.org.
PARENT SURVEY RESULTS
Thank you to the parents for responding to our survey and for sharing your suggestions and concerns in your comments.
We received 235 responses, which exceeds our participation from last year. The majority of responses were positive, especially regarding our communication and encouragement of parent involvement. Many parents expressed an interest in viewing the results of the survey. The results are available online at:

  http://www.nimitzpta.org/parentsurvey/

by clicking on "see current survey results." In order to view the results, you will need to follow the online instructions to register for a PTA password. This is required so that we can limit the viewing of these results to our Nimitz parents only. If you prefer a paper copy of the results, they are available in the office. The School Site Council received valuable information from this survey that will be taken into consideration as we plan for next year. Thank you!

NIMITZ CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION
On Friday during lunch the students will be invited to join the Nimitz Diversity Committee in a celebration of Cinco De Mayo, a national Mexican holiday celebrated by many Nimitz families. They will sample some Mexican bread and drink and hear traditional music as part of the festivities.

STAR TESTING CONTINUES
All students in grades 2-5 have been taking the STAR Test, which continues through May 11th. Please be sure your students get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast each morning and are on time for school. All we ask is that they try their best.

SPRING DANCE
Celebrate spring with dancing, music, food, and fun on Saturday, May 12th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm in the GLC. Enjoy live music with "The Action Figures," and feast on an optional all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner prepared by our catering team!

KINDERGARTEN SUMMER PLAYGROUP
Nimitz School along with the Nimitz PTA will be hosting a series of playgroup sessions for incoming Kindergartners. These sessions help kids meet new friends and reduce separation anxiety before the first day of school this fall.

Playgroups will meet weekly, on Saturdays from 10am to noon beginning July 21st through August 18th. Kids can share arts & crafts and play games; and older siblings are welcome.

We need a volunteer for each session to assist with the playgroup. If you can volunteer to arrive 15 minutes before the session and stay a few minutes afterwards to help with setup and cleanup, or donate simple refreshments, please send an email to playgroup@nimitzpta.org. For more detailed information on the Kinder Playgroup Program and how to get your child involved, go to:

HOW SOME STUDENTS GET THEIR MUSCLES
by Peleg

Now the running club kids are going nuts. They run, they sweat, but most of all they are getting all muscular. So now, instead of wasting your precious time wandering around at recess or lunch, run a little bit and be smart. Also, when you are bored at home and you have nothing to do, don't just sit on your couch eating snacks and waiting for an angel to come. Get up and get active, jog, run, shoot some hoops, anything, but just don't wander around.

BEFORE

AFTER
As you see, I got a picture of an overweight person, eating greasy food and I wrote "before" under the picture, and then I got another person that is skinny and is jogging, and I wrote "after" under the picture. Now, if you don't want to get overweight, and then overweighed and then grow up to be a overweight and wander around person, then join a team of basketball, soccer, football, baseball, or other kind of sport. Sitting around being "L, A, Z, Y," lazy is kind of the same as smoking. And you don't want to smoke, do you? So every time you are about to grab a snack and wander around, think about this tip that I gave you.
